The Indian documentary scene has in the last few years witnessed a new wave combining cinematic excellence with innovations in form, technique and content. Indian docs have been competing and winning accolades at an international level, in spite of limited viewership and minimal funding opportunities. Keeping this is in view, a group of five documentary filmmakers in Bangalore have come together to revive the screening of the best in recent documentary films from India and all over the world and to cultivate a strong, vibrant community of documentary enthusiasts in the city. We hope to make this monthly event a meeting point for filmmakers, to share ideas and concerns, and support each other in our filmmaking practice.
Over the last three years, we have had monthly screenings of Indian and international documentaries at Everest Theatre, Frazer Town, one of the few remaining single screen theatres in the city. The screenings at Everest Theatre have become the largest documentary screening events in Bangalore and on several occasions we have had full houses (500 people), at a time when commercial features barely manage to fill a quarter of the hall.
